Incorrect quotes are the funny, out-of-context lines fandoms put in their favorite characters’ mouths — things the characters never actually said, but absolutely would. If you have ever scrolled past a “Person A: / Person B:” joke on Tumblr and laughed, you have read an incorrect quote. This guide explains what they are, where they come from, and how to write your own.

What Are Incorrect Quotes?
An incorrect quote is a short, made-up exchange of dialogue assigned to existing characters. The humor comes from the gap between what the characters would really say and the chaotic, absurd, or painfully relatable lines fans give them. They are sometimes adapted from memes, text posts, or overheard conversations, then recast with a beloved ship, friend group, or set of OCs.
The format is almost always the same: character names as speakers, followed by their lines, like a tiny script. That simplicity is the whole appeal — anyone can make one in seconds.
Where Did Incorrect Quotes Come From?
Incorrect quotes grew up on Tumblr, where “incorrect [fandom] quotes” blogs collect and reblog them by the thousands. The trend spread to Pinterest, Twitter/X, and Instagram because the format is so shareable — a screenshot, a laugh, a reblog. For many fans, incorrect quotes are a low-effort, high-joy way to stay connected to a story between official releases.
Part of the appeal is that they are collaborative. A line that started as someone’s text post gets recast with one fandom’s characters, then another’s, then yours — the same joke travelling across communities and landing fresh every time. That remix culture is exactly why the format never gets old, and why a generator that swaps in any names you like fits the tradition so well.

Incorrect Quote Templates to Steal
Finished examples are fun to read, but templates are what make writing your own fast. Swap in your characters and the joke structure does the heavy lifting.
- “On a scale of 1 to 10, how illegal is this?” / “…why is there a 12?” — the escalation template: a reasonable question, an unreasonable answer.
- “A: I have a plan. / B: Is it a good plan? / A: It is a plan. Adjust your expectations.” — the lowered-expectations template; works for any chaotic character.
- “A: Define [word]. / B: That’s a no. / A: That’s a no.” — the define-it template: one character dodges, the other translates.
- “A: We are NOT lost. / B: Then where are we? / A: …spiritually? Thriving.” — the denial template: confidence in the face of all evidence.
- “B: Rate my idea. / A: Zero stars. / B: You haven’t heard it. / A: I know you.” — the roast template: the joke is how well they know each other.
Try each template with your own cast in the generator below — two to four characters, since the best templates need a reactor.
Incorrect Quotes for Ships and OTPs
Incorrect quotes are not just for friend groups. Some of the most reblogged ones are ship quotes, because the format is perfect for the dynamic fans love most: two people who know each other far too well.
A ship quote compresses a whole relationship into four lines — the teasing, the bickering, the soft moment that slips out mid-joke. The humour lands because the reader already knows the pairing; the quote just says the quiet part out loud.
- A: “You are the worst.”
B: “You are smiling.”
A: “I am not.”
B: “You are.” - A: “We agreed to be normal about this.”
B: “You lasted four minutes.”
A: “That is a personal best.” - A: “Stop looking at me like that.”
B: “Like what?”
A: “…like that.”
The trick is the same as any incorrect quote — cast against type, keep it short, let the third line be the soft one. Drop any pair into the generator and the ship writes itself.
How to Write Your Own Incorrect Quotes
- Cast against type. Give the most serious character the dumbest line — contrast is where the comedy lives.
- Keep it short. The best incorrect quotes are two to four lines. Brevity is the joke.
- Use a reactor. A third character who just says one stunned line often seals it.
- Borrow from real life. Overheard arguments and group-chat chaos make perfect source material.
- Stay in character. The funniest quotes are absurd and still feel like something that person would say.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does “incorrect quote” mean?
It means a funny, made-up line of dialogue attributed to a character who never actually said it — a fandom joke format, not a real quotation.
Where do people post incorrect quotes?
Mostly Tumblr, Pinterest, and Twitter/X, often on dedicated “incorrect [fandom] quotes” blogs that collect and share them.
Can I make incorrect quotes for my OCs?
Definitely. Incorrect quotes are a popular way to show off an OC’s personality and the dynamic within an original cast.
Incorrect quotes work best when the voices still feel true to the characters — if you are new to the idea, start with what is a headcanon.
